VMWare is a system that supports the running of multiple operating systems (or instances of an operating system) simultaneously on a single piece of computer hardware, presenting the abstraction of a seprate virtual machine to each of the underling guest operating systems.
Key Papers and best academic references VMware is widely used, but there does not seem to be a single authoritiave paper on the system in the traditional academic journals or conferences. Two of the more commonly cited papers that discuss VMware are:
  • J Sugerman, G. Venkitachalam, and B-H Lim, Virtualizing I/O Devices on VMware Workstations Hosted Virtual Machine Monitor. In Proceedings of the 2001 Usenix Annual Technical Conference, Boston, June 2001.
  • Carl A. Waldspurger, Memory Resource Management in VMware ESX Server. In Proceedings of the 5th Symposium on Operatig Sysem Design and Implementation, Boston, December 2002.
